What Our Customers Think

How Do Solar Panels Work?

The Process

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity through photovoltaic cells. When exposed to sunlight, these cells generate a flow of direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts DC into usable alternating current (AC) electricity. This electricity powers household appliances. Surplus energy is fed back to the grid or, optionally, battery storage can store surplus energy for later use. By harnessing solar energy, solar panels offer a sustainable way to power homes while reducing carbon footprint and energy bills by as much as 90%

Solar How It Works
Your Questions, answered:
What are the benefits of using solar energy?

Utilising solar panels enables you to generate your own clean, renewable power, without relying on the grid or fossil fuels or worrying about fluctuating energy costs, leading to significantly lower energy costs and increased property value.

Do pitch and orientation affect performance?

In the UK, the optimum position for a panel is facing due south and tilted upwards at an angle of 38°. However, any position between south-east and south-west at an angle between 20° and 50° will perform incredibly well.

North-facing roofs can also benefit from solar panels, their output is typically 50% less than a south facing roof, but it’s still harnessing free energy and can significantly reduce your electricity bill.

How do I determine the right size battery for my solar energy needs?

Choosing the right battery size is crucial to maximise the benefits of home battery storage. Assess your energy requirements and consider factors like excess solar energy generation. It’s essential to strike a balance between capturing enough energy with a small battery to use in the evening and utilising a big battery to take advantage of overnight charging when energy costs are lower, using it during daytime when energy prices are higher. Additionally, exploring changes in your energy tariff may further enhance the cost-effectiveness of your energy storage solution.

What is the installation procedure?

Scaffolding (if required) will usually be erected 2-3 days prior to installation. The installation team will arrive on the chosen day and one team will install the panels on the roof, whilst the electrical team install the battery and inverter.

This usually takes 1 day, but for larger projects or trickier roofs it can take up to 2-3 days. Scaffolding is then removed after the project is installed.

What are the panel and inverter brands that Kimble Solar recommend?

We recommend DMEGC solar panels and SolarEdge and FoxESS batteries and inverters. If you have a strong preference towards other brands, we regularly fit all the reputable brands so please ask your consultant.

What is the export tariff?

If you have your solar PV system installed with a MCS accredited installer (as Kimble Solar are) you will be eligible to export your excess energy to the grid.

The price fluctuates, but companies such as Octopus generally pay over 20p/kWh.

View One of Our Case Studies

This Maidenhead customer’s new system installed this week by the team is not only looking great, but it’s ready to massively reduce his electricity bills from day one! They’ve maximised the south-facing aspect of their roof, and since the scaffolding already allowed access to the small part of west-facing roof adjacent, it was very cost-effective to add another panel there to catch the evening rays.

Clever additions and other tweaks to optimise to this customer’s ROI means he’s set to earn back his entire Solar investment after just 6 years and 2 months. Thereafter will be pure profit.
System: 9x Jinko 435w panels (3,708kWh per year), birdblocker, optimisers, fox ESS 11.52 kWh battery, and fox ESS 3.68 kW inverter.

Quality is key!

We are committed to consistent product research and testing, and only offer the best quality products to our customers. We always recommend our favourite brands that we know will serve you well, however, we are proficient installers of all reputable solar brands, so please discuss with us if you have alternative preferences.

Solar Panels Across Roof of Building

Solar Panels

We fit all black monocrystalline panels with bird-proofing as standard. They are highly efficient whilst also being more attractive than traditional solar panels. Our quality panel brand of choice is DMEGC.

Solar Panel Battery System

Batteries & Invertors

An equally integral part of the system, the inverter converts energy from DC to AC, and your battery stores it for later use. The brand's product performance, user portal, customer service and warranties are all crucial. We recommend SolarEdge and FoxESS.

More Ways To Save

Whilst you can earn money from sending surplus energy back to the grid, the profit is minimal. Instead, you can further reduce your energy bills by diverting energy to other parts of your home!

You can not only store excess solar energy in your battery for later use, but it can also be used to charge your electric vehicle and heat your water.

Hot Water Diverter

If you are also looking to reduce your gas bill, then you could install a hot water diverter which rediverts surplus energy to heat your hot water tank. These innovative devices not only contribute to minimising your reliance on traditional energy sources but also provide a holistic approach to reducing your energy costs.

With an EV charger that has a solar-charging facility you could also benefit from charging the vehicle using your excess solar generation. You can charge for free directly from the sun during daylight hours, or you can charge your battery on cheap overnight electricity, and then use that to charge your car.
